"Professional Assistants Day"?!?!?!?

So this week was Professional Assistants day - fka - Secretary's Day! YUCK!!

I started my career some 33 years ago at American Equity Corporation - and yes - I was proud to be a "secretary". It ran its course and I knew that I must complete my education and get my degree - which after 11 long years - I did. I majored in accounting at the 'U', passed the CPA exam, worked for Coopers & Lybrand in public accounting and became a "licensed professional".

Well to make a long story short, six years ago, I was looking for work and was hired by a "grand old law firm" - Prince, Yeates and Geldzahler - as their Controller/Accounting Manager. This is an office where the "secretaries" are still referred to as "the girls" and if you a woman - you are automatically grouped with "the girls".

The first "professional assistants" day I was around for - I walked into my office and found a flower in a vase with a card thanking me. Needless to say - I was "livid" - I was not anyone's "professional assistant". I remember throwing the card and exclaiming - "I hate this place - I am so over qualified for this job - it's ridiculous!" The office manager - who has been with the firm for 35 years - figured out how I felt - and apologized for the flower, note, etc.....

Well some five years later - I am still here - "the girls" are still referred to as "the girls". I go to the luncheon - but as part of management - and I haven't received another flower!!!! Yesterday, as the luncheon was winding down, the conversation around the table was getting a little edgy (actually gross). One of "the girls" (who I think is 57 years old) began talking about a subject that was inappropriate, and I didn't like it. I looked around the room, looked at my cell phone, stood up and walked out! It felt great! I didn't say anything - but I think "the girls" finally figured out I wasn't one of "the girls"!!!!!

Tragic Loss....

When I heard the news that a missionary had been killed in Brazil by a "hit and run" driver, I immediately thought about Preston and was thankful he was safe. Today I read Elder Knoop's obituary and it really hit me hard. He was the same age as Preston, was a great athlete, and a wonderful son. He also has a sister, Marnie, who is a swimmer. Wow - I've had tears in my eyes all morning.
You see, Meranda has been competing against Marnie Knoop in swimming since she was 11 years old. Meranda's specialty is the butterfly - just like Marnie. We didn't really like Marnie - thought she was kind of snotty - afterall she lived in Park City - but transferred to Skyline to swim!!
I now feel a real connection with the Knoop family and I know how they must feel at this time....

What to do with the family plow????

So, Evan went to Wayne County over the weekend and brought home his Great Grandpa Wood's plow - WOW!

Tonight it is planted in the front yard - behind the "butt" rock. I think we should try and sell it on Ebay. Evan wants it to be displayed in the yard - a real life farm implement.

Parker is a Dodger

Baseball season has started. The Dodgers have one win and one loss.
Only 16 more games to go. Parker hit the ball, got on base and had an RBI!
Way to go Parker. Doesn't he look great in his uniform?!?!?!?!?!?

Homerun #3.......

Hunter vs. #1 Spanish Fork - or just "Spanish" as their fans cheered - "Go Spanish". What's up with that??

Meranda gave them a little "Spanish" - a three run homerun over left field fence..... She also made some great defensive plays - including a double play to end inning #4. Unfortunately the team ended up losing - but not because "Spanish" outplayed them - in plain "English" the Wolverines beat themselves...

as reported By Chhun Sun The Salt Lake Tribune

After having their pitcher, Saphina Butler, score in the second, the Wolverines (9-3) made things very interesting the following inning. Senior Meranda Wood clocked a three-run homer to left field, putting the score at 4-0 for Hunter - in its first-ever meeting against the 2006 state champion.

Mr. Chhun Sun had a lengthy telephone interview with Meranda on Tuesday (the day before the game with "Spanish"). She "talked the talk" with him and then followed it up with a "trot" around the bases.....
